Every year there seems to be more and more things to do on Family Day. Some of it is for families, but a lot of it is just fun. Last year on the Family Day long weekend my family and I ventured to Old Fort William and experienced the excitement of the Voyageur Festival, so this year we decided to see what else Thunder Bay had to offer us as entertainment. We spent the morning at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery and then we headed to The Marina for some outdoor frolicking.
The Thunder Bay Art Gallery had some wonderful displays featuring the under appreciated art of the comics. The main gallery hosted art from Lynn Johnson, who we will recognize as the creative genius behind For Better or For Worse. On top of that, in the smaller gallery, was Unconstrained which is an exhibition of five local comic artists, two of which were at the Gallery this Family Day. Andrew Dorland was helping kids create their own superheroes with the use of a basic outline, and Kyle Lees was at the front entrance offering to do Digital Portraits for any one who wanted one (it was at a pay what you can basis, but the pictures were well worth it). Both these gentlemen’s art can be seen in the Unconstrained exhibition along side the art of boy Roland, Merk, and Callen Banning. We all had fun creating some artwork of our own as well as checking out the work of some wonderful comic artists, and the free lunch from Pita Pita was pretty awesome too.
After a little breather at home we donned our winter apparel and headed to The Marina to check out the outdoor activities. There was the usual skating going on, but there was a lot more happening in every direction. There was Sledge Hockey, snowshoeing, sledding, and more. We checked out the terrific snow sculptures, the kids tried snowshoeing, and I pushed Alice around on a kicksled which is a pretty handy way of getting around in the winter. Plenty of walking and goofing off was done with plenty of stuff still to do. The Chili Cook-off was going down with many delicious entries. The Marina Park SnowDay was a success with our family. Hope you and your family had fun this weekend.
