Ginger + Ale @ The Foundry

Thursday night found Chris and me journeying to the Heart of the Harbour and into the embracing warmth of The Foundry on Red River road. Thursday seems like a strange time to be going out, but like Jack Torrance once said “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. Friday seems like less of a daunting beast after going out and enjoying some incredible entertainment and a couple of beers.

For those of you who haven’t been to The Foundry, it has a very inviting atmosphere and an extensive beer menu that boasts many of Canada’s top breweries, as well as some imports and more familiar brands of ale. Don’t worry if beer isn’t your thing there are plenty of other drink options. I am pretty confident when I say that they have something for everyone. Another most have at The Foundry are their desserts. It is a surprise every time and you’d have to ask the waitress/waiter about the dessert for the night, but whatever it is I suspect it will be delectable.

On to the entertainment, The Foundry usually has live music going on and Thursday night was no exception. The musical talents that graced the stage were Matt Sellick, an independent musician, with Tony Agostino from Flamenco Caravan accompanying him. Most of us associate the fiery guitar of Flamenco with the exotic Spaniards, but this ginger minstrel can change your opinion very quickly. Matt Sellick’s performance was hypnotic in its beauty and execution. You almost forget that you are just sitting in a pub in the winter town of Thunder Bay and start dreaming of warmer climates and alluring locations. I have heard Matt play many times before and each time I can’t help but be swept up in the beauty of it.

I can only conclude that a Thursday evening out was well worth the effort of finding a babysitter and then a parking spot. For more information about Matt you can visit his Facebook page, or if you want to see what his music is all about his album ‘After Rain’ is available on iTunes.
