Now that the snow is gone and the sun is out, at least some of the time, it is time to journey out into the scenic places that Thunder Bay has to offer. Once the weather (finally) warmed up our family has been using any excuse to get out of the house and take a quiet walk through the wilds of Thunder Bay.

The trails at The Cascades Conservation Area has been our favourite romping grounds, thus far. They have offered us a quiet place to walk with the kids and Jake the dog, though the kids usually end up destroying any amount of silence that was out there, I mean, who really needs to see the furry critters that populate the area anyway? The different paths allow us to mix it up every time we go there.

As the season progressed we watched the Cascades go from overflowing to something a whole lot less intimidating. Even though it’s a popular place for people who want to walk their dogs (or kids) the variety of trails makes it feel as if you are the only people there. We are looking forward to the hikes and probably a picnic or two that are in our future.

At the beginning of May was Mother’s Day so our family decided to check out the Thunder Bay Conservatory, which was something I had done fairly often when I was a kid, so it was a bit of a nostalgic trip for me.

The Conservatory was first opened in 1967 and has been a popular place for wedding photos and family trips. There are events that are held at the Conservatory by the Friends of the Thunder Bay Conservatory that happen throughout the year. The plants are still impressive especially since most of them have been there since the place opened.

Another highly anticipated event in May came and went, and, for once, was absolutely gorgeous. May long weekend ended up being hot, sunny, and full of potential. We decided to check out Kakabeka Falls for some fun in the sun. We brushed off our shorts, found our sunscreen, packed a picnic and headed out. We weren’t the only ones that had decided the Falls would be a good place to chill. The campground was well populated and the swimming area was full of tiny swimmers, the only ones brave enough to venture into the ice cold water. We splashed around and enjoyed the sun. The area had much improved since the last time I was there and that was good to see. The water at the falls was a little low, but the view was still incredible. It made for an awesome start to our May long weekend. We hope you had a fantastic May, and if not get off your arse and head outside for some fresh air.
