Winter Reminiscing

As the snow piles up on the ground and the trees hang bare and lifeless we tend to forget what the warmth of summer felt like, what nature in full bloom was like. Summer holds so many possibilities for us that we tend to grow lethargic and coped up in the cold of winter. So to remind us all of warmer times lets take a look back at some summer adventures.

Summer of 2017 was full of so many things to do in Thunder Bay that it was hard to decided what to do. The first thing on our families list of “Must Do’s” was the Karnival on the Kam which took place at Fort William Historical Park. We were definitely not the only family to make the trip out there especially when they promised us the Worlds Largest Fireworks Display! Now who in their right mind could say no to that?

They had arranged a couple of areas where preforms could strut their stuff and each area had a different show. This made it possible to watch the performers without having to fight for a spot to see. The rotating schedule also made it possible to see a wide variety of the acts without missing to much. They even put on an incredible water show on the Kam river with stunt water skiing and water jet acrobatics. The Karnival was an incredible change from some of the other events that are normally held during the summer, ie. music festivals, which aren’t exactly geared to families. This is something I hope will continue every year.

As summer moved on our next family adventure brought us to Neys Provincial Park for a weekend camping trip. I had been to the Park when I was a kid but hadn’t been back for quite a few years. Neys is about a three and a half hour car trip from Thunder Bay, just west of Marathon, which wasn’t too bad with two kids in the backseat of a car. The Park had started it’s life as a German POW camp, not much is left of the old camp but they have a lot of information posted in the Visitors Centre and around the camp. It was a spectacular trip with some wonderful hiking trails. I think this will be a trip we will make again.

The final family adventure from the summer was the colourful and entertaining Festival of Colours which takes place every year down at the Marina. It was definitely a blast to take the kids and toss colours in the air. We walked away fully covered and loving every minute of it. It was an experience that we would like to repeat again this coming summer and it gave us a chance to learn something about another culture. I am so happy that Thunder Bay chooses to embrace the multicultural traditions of the residence of this city and I hope I get to see more opportunities to learn more about different cultures and traditions.

We hope that this little trip back to summer was enough to warm your bones and perhaps tide you over until the sun and the warmth returns to our city. Let us hope that Spring comes early, but in the mean time there are still plenty of adventures to be had in the Winter.
