Summer Come Early

With the completion of May long weekend I think we were all surprised by the summer weather we got to indulge in. I think the only negative side to the weekend was the fire ban. I will keep my fingers crossed that with some rain we’ll be able to enjoy those comfortable backyard fire pits.

As a mother of a new baby I have been trapped indoors all winter, so when the sun is shining I will find any excuse I can to get my butt, and the baby, outside to soak up some vitamin D, which we are both in desperate need of.

The weekend started with a cloudy and slightly windy Saturday, but the sun was still shinning and the temperature was comfortable, so we packed up the kids and headed to Centennial Park to burn off some of our pent up winter energy and to introduce the baby to nature. We weren’t the only family that had decided to enjoy the spring weather, but it was nice and quiet, perfect for a stroll around the park. It felt good to stretch the legs and brush off the winter dust, it made us excited about the coming summer and the possibilities it brought with it.

Sunday brought with it the heat and sun that bordered on summer weather. With the fantastic weather we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to yet again venture into the outside spaces of Thunder Bay. Since Fort William Historical Park had opened their doors for the season we once again packed up the kids and headed out. Once we arrived it was suggested to us that we take the guided tour since some of the buildings weren’t open to the public just yet. Turned out that it wasn’t such a bad idea; I had been out to the Fort so many times just to walk around that it was nice to see the employees play their parts and tell their stories. It was refreshing to hear the stories of Thunder Bay’s past again. At the farm the kids were surprised to find some new babies, which included seven piglets and some new chicks, which will be out in the yard in the next couple of weeks. I would definitely recommend that if you haven’t taken a tour in a while to do so, just to refresh what you know or discover something you didn’t.

We finished our tour, and I realized I had forgotten to apply my own liberal amount of sunscreen to my shoulders, so we were hot and craving something cool and refreshing. The only place in our minds to go would be, for our first trip of the season, to Merla Mea’s for a twin cone. It was a perfect end to the day and we were pretty sure the kids would be heading to bed with little complaint that evening.

Holiday Monday was upon us, and it was another summer-like day. As much as we considered heading out, I decided it was time to do the yard work we had been putting off since the snow melted. With the grass raked and the dead branches picked up, I pulled out our little baby pool, filled it, and set it in the sun to warm up. I cleaned off the patio table, took out the cushions, and put some ciders in the fridge. It was great to be able to relax in our own back yard without having to deal with the hassle of getting three kids ready to go out. Sunscreen was applied to the kids and drinks were applied to the adults, and we all relaxed and enjoyed the warmth of the sun.

It was a terrific beginning to the outdoor season, which we hope to use to the best of our abilities this summer. Even with the addition of a baby to our family dynamic it won’t be stopping us from experience what Thunder Bay has to offer.
