Art in the Heart of Thunder Bay

Friday night is the night where most people find themselves searching for fun and excitement. Some turn to the bars and pubs of Thunder Bay to have a few with their friends, while others head to the theatre to lose themselves in stories and fantasies. For me I like to explore the different sides of Thunder Bay; the conventional, and the intriguing, as long as I have someone to drag along with me I’m pretty willing to venture into the anything.

This Friday a friend and I went to Definitely Superior, or, as it is more commonly called Defsup, for their Gala opening. Defsup is an alternative to the typical art galleries, museums, and commercial art venus that most people would think of when the words “art gallery” are dropped. They have dedicated this gallery to promote and support new and contemporary art for both local and international artists. This Friday was the opening night of three artistic installations from a variety of artists.

The main room was the immersive installation of Thunder Bay’s own boy Roland called ODEUM. It was a very dream like presentation that filled the entire room with vividly painted images. You are able to walk around the artificial forest and delve into the mind of boy Roland and experience things from his perspective.

The second room contained the three person exhibition titled ISOLATION/INSULATION.  Scott Poluyko, Katie Lemieux, and Susan Kachor Conlon are three regional artists that contributed their work to this installation which touched on the theme of self-isolation in our current society. The subject matter is a very serious issue and these three did a terrific job of expressing it through different artistic mediums. They were all beautiful and yet tragic. The last room in the Defsup galleries was titled ARTISTS’ PROOF it contained the prints from the LU archives from previous students. Brushing the dust off these pieces and sharing them with the outside world years later allowed these artists to be remembered and for their art to be seen by new admirers. The exhibits will be running in the Defsup galleries until March 5th so go check them out.
