Putting the New back in New Years

The Christmas holidays gave Chris and I a unique opportunity to experience some new things that we normal don’t get an opportunity to do in Thunder Bay since we were with out children for a week. Once we were able to get control of our weeping we gathered ourselves and ventured out into the wide white(ish) world of Thunder Bay.

I was lucky enough to have a friend that suggested that we take a little adult getaway and recommended Rose Valley Lodge and Restaurant to me. I had never heard of the place so I quickly Googled it and was instantly intrigued. Chris and I can never pass up an opportunity to devour delicious food and indulge in peace and quiet so we jumped at the chance to go. Rose Valley Lodge is located in South Gillies, which is about 30-45 minutes from Thunder Bay, it is tucked away in a valley surrounded by picturesque mountains and woods. We decided to reserve one of the two private cabins that they have for their Getaway package that includes a 5 course meal (which was incredible) and a small breakfast.

Log cabins available at Rose Valley Lodge and Restaurant

The log cabins are beautiful and inside you will find a small Jutol fireplace that keeps the cabin feeling warm and tranquil. The bathroom is large and houses a lovely Jacuzzi tub. It made for a perfect couples escape. The food was prepared by Marcus Hofmann who came to Thunder Bay from Switzerland 19 years ago and has been running the Rose Valley Lodge (previously named the Unicorn Inn) for 18 of those years. The main building, which has B&B rooms available, was originally built in 1902. The food was excellent, each course was perfectly prepared and we would definitely go back just for the food. It was the perfect way to spend a weekend and we are planning on going back in the summer. to make a reservation or to find out more check out their website at www.rosevalleylodge.com

Mount Baldy ski hill, Thunder Bay, Ontario

After the relaxation and quiet of the cabin we decided that we would try something else new. Well Chris had done it before, many times, but I never had the urge to strap a board to my feet and slide down a mountain. So after a bit of convincing we headed to Mount Baldy where Chris was going to teach me and my sister how to snowboard. The experience wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, though I did walk off the hills with a head ache and more then a couple bruises on my tush. Chris said I didn’t do too badly for my first time, so maybe I’ll be willing to give it another go.

Hope everyone is enjoying their winter. Don’t be afraid of the cold and snow, there is still plenty to do and if I can take a chance and ride down a mountain on a snowboard maybe you can too.
